The Hillsborough Street, Phase 2 Project has progressed to the point where it is time for the contractor to move into the middle of the street to begin constructing the medians and roundabouts. To accommodate this move, Hillsborough Street will be closed to through traffic this coming weekend from 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23 to 6 a.m. Monday, Feb. 26. If the setup for the new traffic pattern is completed before Monday, Hillsborough Street will be reopened to through traffic early.
Four traffic signals along Hillsborough Street from Brooks Avenue to Shepherd Street will be removed in order for three new roundabout traffic patterns to be put in place: at Shepherd/Rosemary Streets, at Dixie Trail/Friendly Drive, and at Brooks Avenue. Traffic will be shifted to the outside lanes, allowing the construction of the medians and roundabouts. There will be a left-turn lane at Dan Allen Drive for cars entering from Hillsborough Street but there will only be a right turn from Dan Allen onto Hillsborough Street. The Brooks Avenue intersection will function as a roundabout for those wanting to head west. Cones and barrels will delineate the new roundabouts and travel lanes. Temporary signage will be in place at the roundabouts to aid drivers and pedestrians. New pedestrian midblock crossings will be opened for use.
Despite the construction, businesses along the Hillsborough Street corridor remain open. Patrons can still visit their favorite restaurant, shop or other business as access to these businesses is being maintained.
