Contractors are working towards having the rain garden, located in front of the 2811 building between Dan Allen Drive and Zaxby’s, built before this weekend.
On Friday, December 16, crews were able to complete the foundation for the rain garden and on Saturday morning the stone was placed in the bottom.
On Wednesday, December 21, the rain garden pieces are scheduled to be installed. With each piece weighing upwards of 18,000 pounds, a crane and excavator will be utilized to set the pieces.
Due to the size of the pieces and the swing radius of the excavator placing the pieces, the eastbound lane of Hillsborough Street will need to be closed intermittently on Wednesday. Contractors will have flaggers on hand to alternate the westbound and eastbound traffic flow when needed, and if the traffic flow gets too backed up contractors will station flaggers to detour eastbound traffic. The detour will be Dixie Trail to Everett Street to Brooks Avenue and back to Hillsborough Street.
The setting of the rain garden pieces will be a very delicate procedure and will take some time. Contractors have scheduled this work during the college winter break due to the lower traffic levels.
The crane is scheduled to set up at 7 a.m., and the trucks are anticipated to start arriving at 8 a.m.
