Project

The growth of the City and the importance of safety are key factors to the goals of the Hillsborough Street Renewal Project. These goals are to improve safety for all travelers, accommodate bicycles and pedestrians, reduce vehicular speeds and revitalize corridor, to make Hillsborough Street an even more desirable place to work, shop, dine and live.

The improvements during Phase II will take place on Hillsborough Street from Gardner Street to Rosemary/Shepherd Street.

This project will modify Hillsborough Street from the existing configuration of a multi-lane undivided roadway section to a two lane road with:

  • Raised medians
  • Marked bike lanes
  • Enhanced sidewalks with brick pavers
  • Street trees
  • A rain garden
  • On-street parking where feasible, from Gardner Street to the Rosemary/ Shepherd Street intersection
  • Includes roundabouts at Brooks Avenue, Dixie Trail, and Rosemary/Shepherd Streets.
  • Public art at all three roundabouts
  • Underground utilities and removal of many overhead wires.
  • New transmission poles
