There are many complexities involved in the Hillsborough Street Project, some of which require lane closures, and at times sections of the street will need to be closed to through traffic. Contractors are required to maintain an east and westbound travel lane during business hours, leaving the nighttime hours to complete tasks that require lane closures.
Currently, the night crew is installing new storm drainage pipes from the midpoint of the Stanhope building to the intersection of Friendly Drive. Due to the combination of existing underground utilities and the new design, the new storm pipes must run down the center of the street. With this type of work the only option is to reduce the street down to one lane, with flaggers alternating the flow from eastbound to westbound.
An old water main is right next to the where the new storm pipes are being installed, complicating matters at this location. The water pipe is very fragile and requires that the night crew work a bit slower than is usual. The construction schedule has the night crew operating in this location for the next two weeks. Their working hours are between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday.
Hillsborough Street is a busy thoroughfare even in the evening, so if you are traveling through the work zone expect delays. We update the construction schedule on our website weekly to keep the public abreast of where work will be going on and help plan their travel accordingly.
