January has seen some extreme weather conditions, with everything, from bitterly cold temperatures to spring-like weather including snow and rain. Although the severe weather creates problems, it has not caused the construction progress along the corridor to stop, and we continue to see progress.
Construction progress to take note of:
• The brick sidewalk is 85 percent complete on the north side of the street;
• Concrete work on the north side is at 90 percent complete;
• Trees are being planted along the south side of the street; and,
• More bike racks are going in along the corridor.
This past weekend Pipeline Utilities closed Hillsborough Street to through traffic while they completed a storm drain crossing and two conduit crossings between Friendly Drive and Concord Street. They had scheduled the street closing for Saturday and Sunday but were able to complete the work on Saturday and reopen the street to through traffic late that night.
The snow and rain have caused a delay in paving operations, but as soon as the sun comes out and things are dry enough, crews will start paving operations between Dixie Trail and Shepherd Street. Weather permitting, Dixie Trail is scheduled to be paved and reopened to traffic late this week or early next week.
Daisy Street will be closed to traffic at the intersection of Hillsborough Street starting Monday, Feb. 5. The closure will include the intersection of Hillsborough Street to approximately 170 feet north of the intersection and will allow Pipeline Utilities to complete the remaining storm drain work in the area. New curb and gutter, sidewalks, and paving will follow the storm drain work. The Street is scheduled to reopen this spring.
In the coming weeks, a new traffic pattern will go into effect, setting the stage for the installation of the raised medians and roundabouts. The first roundabout completed will be at the intersections of Rosemary Street and Shepherd Street. The contractor finished the first half of this roundabout before the holiday season and is scheduled to complete construction and reopen Shepherd Street by March.
The February Construction Update Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 13, at 2 p.m. at East Village Grill and Bar. During the meeting Project Manager, Richard Dickie will give an update on the status of the project and what to expect in the coming months. We hope to see you there.
