The roundabout at Brooks Avenue is under construction. As of Thursday, April 12, the inner ring of the roundabout was in place, and the forms for the outer ring was in place and ready for the concrete. The roundabout is scheduled to be completed next week.
Starting Friday night, April 20 through Saturday night, April 21, Hillsborough Street will be closed to through traffic while paving and wedging operations take place at both the Brooks Avenue roundabout and the Rosemary/Shepherd Street roundabout. The south lane of the Shepherd/Rosemary roundabout (for eastbound traffic) may remain closed until Sunday morning. The asphalt here is deeper and may require additional time to cool and harden before it can receive traffic.
Westbound through traffic will be detoured to Gardner Street to Clark Avenue to Brooks Avenue to Wade Avenue to Faircloth Street to Hillsborough Street, and eastbound traffic will be detoured to Faircloth Street to Wade Avenue to Brooks Avenue to Clark Avenue to Gardner Street to Hillsborough Street. Local traffic will be allowed on the street, but there will be a hard street closure at Brooks Avenue and at Rosemary and Shepherd Street. There will be access to Hillsborough Street from Dixie Trail to visit businesses in the middle of the two closures. Flaggers will be used to help drivers make U-turns at Dan Allen Drive to reach the businesses between there and Dixie Trail on the north side of the street.
When the road reopens to traffic, both roundabouts will be in the full roundabout traffic pattern, with the possible exception of the south side of the Shepherd/Rosemary roundabout as noted above. Construction on the Dixie Trail/Friendly Drive roundabout is scheduled to begin Monday, April 23 without the full roundabout traffic pattern.
As always construction dates are subject to change due to weather and other unforeseen conditions.
