Hillsborough Street in the New Year

Construction activity in front of Cup a Joe and Nice Price Books

Posted Tuesday, Dec. 19

Construction activity along Hillsborough Street will be rather quiet during the holidays between December 22 and January 2. There may be some brick sidewalk installation along the corridor between Shepherd Street and Daisy Street and maybe some telecommunications and electrical conduit work between Concord and Daisy Street. But, the new year will bring some new construction activity to Hillsborough Street.

A crew will begin significant grading work on Dixie Trail between the East Village Grill and Bar northern driveway and the intersection with Hillsborough Street. Once the grading work is completed, they will start to install the curb and gutter and, driveway aprons, and then the installation of brick sidewalk will follow. If the weather stays dry and not too cold, the contractor anticipates being able to open Dixie Trail back up to through traffic by the beginning of February.

Construction has the front door closed at Cup a Joe and Nice Price Books, but no worries you can still get your books and coffee. The back doors are open! Crews are installing the storm drains and then will install curb and gutter, tree wells and brick sidewalk. We are looking forward to the wider sidewalk outside these two businesses. It sure will make it more pleasant to read and drink coffee with some added space between the seats and the street traffic.

Once the sidewalks are completed, and Dixie Trail is opened back up, the contractor will shift their focus to the remaining stormwater work on Daisy Street and the roundabout and median construction. In short, Hillsborough Street will take on a new face in the new year.

To start the new year, we look forward to the January Construction Update Meeting which will take place at East Village Grill and Bar on January 9, at 2 p.m. During this meeting the Project Manager, Richard Dickie, will talk about scheduled construction activity for the next two months. This is an excellent opportunity to hear project details and ask project related questions.
